WAIPUKURAU POOLS

Pool: Waipukurau - Waipukurau Pool
06-858-8972
Grade: B-
The Good: Lovely pool, modern, big windows, clean, good depth, good water temperature, not crowded, gear provided.
The Ugly: Opportunity lost.
Reflections: The Waipukurau Pool is one of the standard 25m pools plus learners pool and wooden laminated beams being built all over New Zealand just now. In small communities like Wairoa and Danniverke the pools are a major achievement. In Waipukurau it is just a pass and in Napier it is a failure. There is nothing wrong with the pool. It's just that a huge amount of time, effort and money went into building the place and nothings happened. There is a facility that could and should be producing achievements of great civic pride and all the town got was just another pool with a local swimming club struggling to make ends meet. Sadly all this was explained to those responsible at the time the pool was being built. They took the safe option and lost. We were pleased when a New Zealand Open Women's record was broken there. It showed, for any who had the wit to understand, what might have been - not only in competitive swimming but in all the aquatic sports. It really is sad that all that effort, all those fights all that money and the town ends up with a resource not producing anything like its potential.
