Pool: Dannevirke - Wai-Splash Indoor Heated Pool

The Good: The pool is indoors, it has six lanes and always has room for unfettered lap swimming. The huge windows give the facility an open, fresh feel. The water temperature and water quality are good. Staff are helpful and pleasant.
The Ugly: Of course it does not have all the facilities of pools in bigger cities. Is that ugly? Not really.
Reflections: The quality of a pool needs to be measured in relation to its environment. The Dannevirke Pool is one of those standard pools being built all over New Zealand just now. Tokoroa, Wairoa and Waipukurau have one and so does Napier. In a town the size of Dannevirke the pool is a major accomplishment and is a facility the town can enjoy and be proud of. In Napier it's a joke. Another puzzle is why six lanes of 25m in Dannevirke, of relaxed enjoyable swimming take one receptionist/manager plus a lifeguard to look after. The same pool in Napier takes a custodian who acts as if he is running the Palestinian West Bank, a marketing manager, a receptionist and three lifeguards. Michael Laws might take the piss out of Dannevirke but with their pool they should be well pleased.
